Put the butter in an aluminium pudding steamer and place over low heat on top of the stove until the butter is melted, then remove from the heat. Dissolve the carb soda in milk, add with the 2 tablespoons of syrup to the melted butter in the steamer, and stir (it may froth up, due to the carb soda). Add the flour and mix again. Cover with a layer of buttered foil and clamp steamer lid tightly over foil. Steam in boiling water in a large covered saucepan for about 1 hour (the water should come about 1" up the side of the steamer - check regularly during steaming and top up water as needed).
When cooked, turn onto a plate, and lightly score the top of the pudding with a sharp knife. Warm the extra golden syrup in a small saucepan till runny and pour over the top of the warm pudding to soak in. Serve warm with cream/ice cream.
